The TalkSpace Story Cupboard

I've been seeing commercials for TalkSpace on TV and wondering if anyone would really pay $35 a week to talk to an unknown psychiatrist on their phone.  For one thing - how on earth do you know for sure that the person is a real doctor?  Then you begin to wonder - what if the government can actually hear these conversations and is doctor/patient confidentiality even possible.  Imagine admitting that you're a serial killer or on the verge of killing someone.  And if you think even farther what about a service that provides a priest for confessions - you have all the same concerns.  If you care to step into the spec-fiction arena with this one how about a group of aliens listening in to observe the mental state of Earthlings.  What an earful they'd get.  Sanity or insanity?  You story is just a phone call away from your imagination.

Hunkering Down

Just thought I'd let everyone know that we're going to get hit by what my son calls a "french toast storm".  You know, the kind where everyone runs out and stocks up on bread, milk, and eggs. :)  The storm is supposed to come in tonight and continue through to Wednesday night if you believe all the weather people.

Where we're sitting in Northeast PA they're calling for 12 to 18 inches of snow and heavy winds which means that the electric might go out.  Which in turn means no Internet.  So if you don't hear from me for a few days you'll know why.  I don't have to worry about heat as I have a propane heater with a wood stove backup.  It's always warm in my house.  And I've stocked up on my french toast ingredients :)

New Crime Magazine Coming Soon

Back in February Michael Bracken sent me a link to this comment over on the SleuthSayers blog

"Rick Ollerman said...
I hope the short story form isn't too dead--this summer we're launching a new digest-sized magazine called DOWN & OUT: The Magazine. The first issue features a new Moe Prager story by Reed Farrel Coleman and the second a new Sheriff Dan Rhodes story by Bill Crider (I very much hope). I'm (Rick Ollerman) editing the thing and we should have a press release and a website out and up by the end of the month.

Good news for our community, I hope..."

I've been doing searches and there's finally a page up for the new magazine.  Sadly, there's no submission guidelines yet but it's a start and something to keep your eye on.

The One Phone Call Story Cupboard

While searching for markets tonight I ran across a blog called "Your One Phone Call:  Poetry With a Knife Edge".  Now the blog is actually a non-paying literary zine based in Wales which accepts poetry, flash fiction, and short stories.

But it wasn't the market that spoke to me but its name.  I thought what a great idea for an anthology - Your One Phone Call.  Who would you call if you were arrested or committed a crime and needed help to clean it up.  Perhaps you decided to murder someone and needed help, who would you call?  The idea of having only one phone call that could change the entire course of your life just set the creative juices flowing in so many different directions.  Who would your character call?

Crime Fiction Market Roundup for 2016 - New Markets

And now for the good news - the new markets that have hit the virtual streets this year.  We lost more than we gained but with any luck this year will be better.

Gamut Magazine opened this year and usually have so many submissions that they close the window within 24 hours of opening on the first of each month.  They are a pro-paying market.

Switchblade opened for submissions late in the year.  They've published their lineup for the first issue which is due in March.  This is a non-paying market.

Occult Detective Quarterly opened for submissions, selected their stories, but haven't yet published their first issue.  Payment here is 1cent a word for original work and $25 for reprints.

DeadLights Magazine is a horror magazine but noir crime stories can be an excellent fit.  Submissions for the next issue open on January 15.  They pay $10 to $50 depending on length.

Crimson Streets is a modern pulp market.  They publish online.  They pay 1cent a word.

The Norwegian American is an online newspaper that opened for short mystery fiction last year.  They pay a flat rate of $50.

Dark City Soul opened late last year.  They've only posted a few stories so far but hopefully they'll keep going.  They pay $5 per story.

And finally the beloved Plots With Guns made a return to the virtual streets last Fall.  They pay $10.

Crime Fiction Market Roundup for 2016 - Closed

Well, it's time again to post the annual roundup of short fiction crime markets.  This post contains all the markets that we lost this year.

I think the saddest loss was ThugLit.  It was a great market and one that many writers who were published here went on to have novels picked up.

The Big Click was a great paying market but they never seemed to pick up enough steam to keep going.  They published some excellent fiction here.

Pulp Modern closed their doors this year but there are whispers that they might be coming back.

Crime Factory hasn't announced that they're closing but their last issue was in March and they weren't open to submissions in 2016.

Shock Totem was publishing novellas but they didn't open submissions for the second half of the year.

Noir Nation posted back in June that issue #6 was due out any day but it never appeared.  They have also been closed for submissions for over a year.

Crime City Central was a podcast that posted reprints and sadly they closed their doors this year.

Dead Gun Press went on hiatus last summer and haven't returned.  And the anthologies that were filled haven't been published yet.

And finally Button Tapper Press announced a new imprint called Damned Dames but they never actually published anything.  And the call has disappeared from their website.
