This is too good not to share. Now, when we're writing, we're told to keep things real. Ever had one of your thieves use a backhoe to break into a museum? Um-huh. Nobody would believe that right? Well, there was a guy a few counties over who "allegedly" used a backhoe to break into his father's art museum and steal twenty million dollars worth of paintings. He claimed his father wanted him to make sure they were in a safe place. That excuse might have worked if he'd used a key instead of a backhoe to open the door.

I think the fine line is between keeping it "Real" but keeping it believable. Most readers can't accept things like this that are hard to believe.
Still, it's frustrating as a writer. There's a lot of things we wouldn't get away with writing while people do them in real life to the amazement of all.
I'm so with you on that one, Clair. This could make one heck of a short story romp, but nobody would find it believable. I saw the pictues on the news and still can't quite believe it.
I think it was in one of Mark Coggins' books where a thief used a front loader to rip out ATMs and make off with them. Did it successfully several times. I didn't have any trouble believing it.
Using a backhoe to steal artwork does seem a tad over the top though.
Over the top and then some! I couldn't believe he had the nerve to tell the police that he had permission!
