Another Sneaky Publisher Trend?

On two occasions the past couple of weeks I've clicked on Submittable pages and found that the market listed is charging a fee to submit. One was forty dollars and the other was twenty-five, neither of which was listed in their guidelines.  So before you go to the trouble of writing for a market be sure to check their Submittable page.  No point wasting your time,

Thanks for the warning, Sandra - this does seem to be a new and worrying trend. :(

Yes it is, Fiona. For most of them the fees are under $10 but still they're not posting the fees in the guidelines at their site.

Those are rather steep submission fees! I would avoid such publications. A valuable warning.

Yes, and I think it's very unprofessional of the publishers not to post the fees up front. Plus I don't believe that writers should have to pay to submit, especially to a publishing house.

Not cool, at all.

I wonder whether your money at least buys you a reply.

In some cases it does, Al. Some of the fees pay for a critique, others guarantee nothing.
