New Pulp Press - A Caution

New Pulp Press has posted a list of surcharges that they "might" charge authors on their website.  Scroll down the page for prices and what services they'll be charging for.  This is a crime fiction press.

And I forgot to add the link yesterday.  Doh!

I just posted a link to this and the NPP page on FB. Some of the NPP people, past and present, follow me there. I'm curious to see any responses on this also.

As I mentioned on Facebook, I'm terribly saddened by what's happening here. I started NPP years ago until I gave up control last year. We NEVER charged authors for editing or anything else. I prided myself on making it the most author-centric press around (considering that I am an author as well). The new owners never indicated this was the direction they were headed. I'm so disappointed.

Ass-uming this is because of late edit/errors causing some unforeseen costs, but that means "fix your editing process" don't threaten authors with fees if they want late changes. Wouldn't the contract stipulate this anyway?

Thanks for spreading the word, Brian!

Welcome to the Corner, Mr. Bassoff! I was pretty sure there were never charges before and I'm very sorry to see this happening now.

Yes, Thomas, I understand the charges for late editing, that makes sense. It was the addition service charges that made me post the caution. $100 for an ISBN number for an ebook - $200 for a paperback cover - $50 an hour for additional editing.

Basically they don't want to edit the book, they want it to come in perfectly edited which means the author either pays for an independent editor or pays them to edit the book.
