Once upon a time, you could (possibly) make a living just writing short stories. Ah, well. I still love them, and will keep writing them.Good article by Joe McKinney. I enjoyed his novel "Dead City"; hits the ground running and doesn't stop.
There were quite a few writers who did make a living writing shorts back in the twenties and thirties. Max Brand comes to mind, but I don't think many writers today have the same amount of output.
