Zombies

I've never truly understood the zombie phenomenon that's slowly overtaking the current fad of vampire stories in the horror genre.  They both deal with the undead but vampires are romanticized while zombies are just plain horrifying.  This essay by Stant Litore really gets down to the bones of what zombie fiction can be and gave me a whole new perspective on the topic.  You can read the essay here

And a side note.  If I suddenly disappear for the next few days, don't be alarmed, it's just the "Frankenstorm" riding roughshod over PA.

One of my favorite novels of the year is a zombie novel, Zombie Bake Off by Stephen Graham Jones. Pro wrestlers, zombies, and soccer moms all trapped in an arena together. Pure awesomeness ensues.

Sounds like a fun romp, Brian.

Zombies are your co-workers and neighbors. The (secret) fantasy is you get to blow their heads off. The vampire fantasy is seduction without feeling the consequences of sinning. Or so I'm told. Also, vampires cast no shadows, so when we look in the mirror, the only monsters we see are ... ourselves. Zombies is our reaction to mob rule, while the earliest monsters were destroyed by cheery mobs with torches and pitchforks from the village. Or so I'm told.

They are also the unnamed X that are overrunning society (fill in the X with what you want).

Stay safe, Sandra. You get the snow, we get the rain and floods here in NJ. What a division of labor.

That certainly makes sense, Fred. I have a few neighbors whose heads I wouldn't mind seeing exploded :)

I watched a zombie movie called "Land of the Dead" the other night where the zombies were beginning to think and communicate. Which put a new spin on the old story.

You, too, Al!! All we've gotten so far is some wind and a few sprinkles. The local weather men say we'll probably see heavy rains and winds after 4 this afternoon. No one has mentioned snow yet.

I don't know what it is, maybe the terror, the scare, the more traditional horror and not "pretty" vampires...and I took the plunge, too, tho my teen character is only part zombie.... short synopsis at link Coming 2013: GIRL Z: My Life as a Teenage Zombie
