Crimefactory

There's a new zine out on the virtual streets today. It's called Crimefactory and it's packed with 108 pages of noir/hardboiled goodness. Published in pdf form you'll find movie reviews by the Nerd of Noir, an excerpt from Ken Buren's soon to be released "Killer" and yes, short stories from Frank Bill, Steve Weedle, Dave White and Hilary Davidson. The contents will keep you reading for hours. Thanks to Keith Rawson, Cameron Ashley and Liam Jose for pulling all this great stuff together. You can find Crimefactory here http://www.crimefactoryzine.com/main/HOME.html

And yes, they're open to submissions. They're looking for not only crime stories but noir westerns, hardboiled sci-fi, and gritty urban stories. They'll take stories up to 5000 words but their sweet spot is 3000. This is a non-paying market and you must query first. You can find all the details here http://www.crimefactoryzine.com/main/CONTACT.html

Okay. Not to look a gift-horse in the mouth but... the design of the website is painful on the eyes. My eyes anyway, but design is always a tricky thing to get right.

PDF e-zines combine the worst of old and new publishing but its their magazine so wotever. I don't read PDF zines. Stick it up on the web or put it in .epub format for e-readers. Another tricky choice though, a lot of people want to emulate the style and format of paper magazines and PDFs let them do that.

The snotty tone of whoever wrote their Contacts piece... that they should change.

It does look good, Paul, now if I can just grab the time to read it.

The pdf comes up in black on white so its quite easy to read, Anton, though I do agree that the two column set up makes it necessary to scroll up and down to read the columns. ThugLit does pdf but it's each story individually and no columns. White letters on black really strain my eyes.

As for the tone, it seems to come with the neo-noir zines. ThugLit, Plots with Guns and a Twist of Noir all tend to use an in your face language. I wonder if they figure that if the writer is insulted by the guidelines, they're not writing what that zine is looking for?

You're welcome, Charles.

It all got easier when I shrunk it down to 75%. It was impossible at 133%

Mine came up at 83% and looked good, Patti. Does the 75% put the whole page on the screen instead of having to scroll up and down?

Sandra, thanks for posting this!
And with the overall design of the website, I'll be working on it further tonight to improve its readability.

And with the snarky guidelines, if you are easily insulted we're not the magazine for you.

And as far as content, Cam, Liam and I are very open to all kinds of crime/mystery fiction. But we do know what we like and don't like.
No mystery solving cats, please

Keith - I'm not easily insulted. I never said I found the comments summary insulting. The word I used was "snotty", ie childish. Sorry if I insulted you.

Hehehehe.
