Those Pesky Submission Fees

I noticed the other day that Fahrenheit Press had opened submissions for their anthology Noirville 2.  So why didn't I post it?  Because they're charging a $10 fee to submit this year.  It created a bit of a backlash for them on TwitterAnd here.  The worst part is that the only payment to writers is a royalty split.  None of the fee money goes to the writers as it does in many other contests.

The publisher also has a Patreon. I admire many of the writers published by them, but I would be extremely concerned about their business model. I stayed away because I didn't like their brash social media presence. They do not sound professional to me, despite their claims of years in the business. They remind me of someone who claimed to the son of a famous agent who approached writers so he could "make their career."

I was very surprised to see the fee they were charging, Thomas. It makes me wonder if they'll get any submission or if the quality will be there to make for a good anthology.
