That gives you a good month to come up with a great story for The Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild's anthology "A Hand of Knaves". They're looking for speculative fiction stories up to 5000 words that feature the "knaves" as the protagonist. And yes, they explain exactly what they're looking for in the guidelines. Dakka Press is seeking short stories and audio plays in any genre (PG 13 level) for their online podcasts. They're paying 1.5cents a word with a cap at 3500 words though you may submit longer pieces. Their minimum payment is $20. You can find the details here. This one is for Manuel who asked me a long time ago to find him a market for radio plays :) I finally found one.
Flame Tree Publishing has posted two anthology calls, on for "Pirates and Ghosts" and the second for "Agents and Spies". Stories should be 2000 to 4000 words. The deadline for both is July 7. 2017 and payment is 6cents a word. The good thing about this short notice call is that they'll be taking reprints as well as original work. Owl Hollow Press has an anthology call for a "Pick Your Poison" anthology. They don't specify genre but I think they're leaning more toward the spec-fiction genres. They want stories under 7500 words. The deadline is June 30, 2017 and payment is $50. You can find the details here.
Unnerving Magazine is open for submissions of dark fiction of 400 to 2500 words for a Halloween issue. The deadline is July 14, 2017, payment is 1cent a word. They also have an anthology call for "Hardened Hearts" where they're looking for difficult love stories of 600 to 3000 word. The stories can be any genre including crime fiction but they must be dark. The deadline for this one is "until full" and payment is 1cent a word. For all you Holmes fans out there here's an interesting submission call from Belanger Books for "Sherlock Holmes: Adventures in the Realms of H. G. Wells". They're looking for mystery stories of 5000 to 10,000 words featuring Sherlock Homes solving mysteries set in the worlds created by H. G. Wells. Editor Trisha Faye has posted two no-fiction anthology calls on her site. The first is called "In Celebration of Sisters". They're looking for uplifting essays about sisters of 1000 to 1500 words. Payment is $50 and the deadline is June 30, 2017. The second is called "Mothers of Angels". They're looking for essays of 1500 to 3000 words from mothers who have lost a child. Kirkus Review is seeking reviewers of English and Spanish language titles for their Kirkus Indie line. These are reviews for self-published books. 350 words, payment to be discussed. The online crime magazine Tough has posted its publishing schedule through October with quite a few familiar names on the list. They've also started posting reviews of crime fiction on the site with the short stories coming in July They're also still open for submissions and they pay $25.
If you don't mind writing erotic into your pulp stories Circlet Press has posted an anthology call for "Golden Age of Erotica". They're looking for "erotica that reads like early to mid-twentieth pulp". Stories should be 3000 to 7000 words in length.
