Over at The Horror Tree

Over at the Horror Tree you'll find a very interesting article about giving your monsters a "heart".  Not something you think about when writing but which makes a great deal of sense.  The essay, written by Kevin Holton, is titled "Teeth, Claws, and Heart:  Creating Creatures that Want More than Blind Destruction".

Sounds like a useful article. I remember Ray Harryhausen, the great stop-motion animator, said he didn't think of the creatures he brought to life as "monsters", but as characters, each with its own feelings and agenda.

Harryhausen was a genius so you can't go wrong in following his advice.
