Kat Howard has a most interesting post over at The Rejectionist about the invisibility of women. http://www.therejectionist.com/2011/11/special-guest-post-kat-howard-on.html

Go Kat go. I read scripts for a living and more than a few are speculative/fantasy/sf set in a future where women's roles seem to have regressed to the 50s. Not only do they not reflect current reality, they actively promote the idea that a woman's place is ...back at the space station baking cookies.
Thanks for linking to this provocative post.

Crime fiction is almost as bad, Katherine. The women are either femme fatales or need to be saved from impending danger :)

I know...I've read your thoughts on the subject, along with others' and you're right. What's up with that? And don't get me started on how NBC dumbed down Jane in their version of PRIME SUSPECT, making her cutesy instead of commanding.
I was born into the pre-feminist world and lately, I've become more and more outraged at the status of women in the 21st century. I risk becoming humorless on the topic.

Yes, I know, I feel the same way. When I see shows like PanAm and Playboy on the schedule I wonder why women are taking a step backward instead of forward.
