Story and Grit - New Market

I always find it amazing what you can find when you read short stories online.  This morning I read a story over at Out of the Gutter Online and in the author's bio I discovered that he started an online zine called Story and Grit.  The best part is that this is a crime fiction market looking for stories of 700 to 4000 words in the genres of rough South fiction, crime lit, and horror.  The downside is that they are not a paying market.  You can find the details here.

Edge Publishing - Anthology Call

Edge Publishing has posted an anthology call for "Fantastic Trains:  An Anthology of Phantasmagorical Engines and Riders".  They're looking for speculative fiction stories about trains and the folks who ride them up to 5000 words.  They also have a list of character types they want you to use, one of which is a detective.  The deadline is September 30, 2017 and payment is $50 to $150 depending on length.  You can find the details here.

Dark Cloud Press - Anthology Call

This anthology call from Dark Cloud Press will be a perfect fit for you crime writers.  The anthology is titled "Tales of Blood and Squalor" and they're looking for horror and psychological thrillers that include blood and squalor.  Stories should be 2500 to 5000 words.  I'm posting this early so you can get started on a story if you don't have one.  The submission period opens on August 1 and ends September 30, 2017 or until filled so don't wait until the last minute to submit.  Payment is 3cents a word.  You can find the details here.

The Final Frontier - Reprint Anthology Call - Science Fiction

Editor Neil Clarke has posted an anthology call for "The Final Frontier".  He's looking for reprint science fiction stories from the last twenty years about exploration and discovery beyond one's home world.  Stories should be 3000 to 22,000 words.  The deadline for submissions is August 4, 2017 and payment is 1cent a word plus a royalty share.  You can find all the details here.

Workers Write! has opened submissions for issue #14, "Tales From the Cafe".  They're looking for stories of 500 to 5000 words that are set in the food industry sector.  The deadline is December 31, 2017 and payment is $5 to $50 depending on length.  You can find the details here.

My apologies:  I just noticed this morning that I said this market was Writers Write! but that's not the case, it's Workers Write!  Maybe I've just heard that writers write phrase so often that it just comes natural to write it down.

Argosy Magazine - Open for Submissions

UK based Argosy Magazine is open for submissions for "Volume 3:  Collapsed Binary".  They're looking for stories over 4500 words featuring women as the protagonists.  There's no deadline listed and  payment is a royalty split.  They also have a listing of themes for which they're asking for story queries, one of which is for crime fiction.  You can find the details here.

Boabab Press - Anthology Call

Baobab Press has posted an anthology call for "This Side of the Divide".  They're seeking short fiction of 3000 to 5000 word that explores the United States West.  The deadline is October 31, 2017 and payment is $100.  You can find the details here.  Just scroll down to the bottom of the page.  Also note that this is being put together with an MFA program so they'll be looking for literary stories.

Write Naked - Call for Non-fiction Blog Posts

The Write Naked blog is open for blog post queries for non-fiction posts about writing.  There is a list of ideas to get you started.  Your post should be 450 to 650 words in length but remember, you have to query our idea first.  The deadline is September 30, 2017 and payment is $50.  You can find the details here.

Switchblade Magazine - Submission Period Posted

Just a note to let you crime writing folks know that Switchblade magazine has posted their submission period for the next issue.  It will be opening on July 20, 2017 and end on August 15, 2017.  Don't jump the gun, just mark it in your calendars so you'll be ready. :)
