Anthology Call

I expect the "PC police" will be in an uproar over this anthology call from "Crossed Genres". I'll admit I was a bit put off by the title at first but the idea grew on me and I thought this could be a fun anthology. I have to admit that "Abercrombie Station" by Jack Vance flickered through my mind adding a bit of possibility to the idea.

Anyhoo, the anthology is called "Fat Girl in a Strange Land". They're looking for short stories of 2000 to 6000 words in the sci-fi/fantasy genres. You must have a fat female protagonist adventuring into places she's never been before. Pay is $10 and the deadline is September 30 with publication in 2012. You can find all the details at http://crossedgenres.com/titles/fat-girl-in-a-strange-land/

That is different for sure.

I will say this, CG isn't afraid to push the line either with their zine or now, with this anthology. Last year they took a lot of flack for putting out a gay sci-fi issue.

I've bookmarked this. Not too sure... have never done sc-fi before. Can it be crime with a sc-fi element? Have to think about this one. :)

What they're looking for is adventure stories, Veronica, so yes, there can be a crime. You need to think more along the lines of Indiana Jones in a fat girl body :) Or make her a Clamity Jane type with a Western spin out in space. Crime in the way of stealing artifacts or robbing banks will work, it doesn't have to be murder. Just let your character jump in her space pod and set out on an adventure. Have fun with it.

I was thinking some more and I wanted to add, that even if you submit a story and it's rejected, you've learned how to create a new world and experimented in a new genre.

I play around in both the Western and Sci-fi/fantasy genres and I always learn something new. The stories don't always find their way into the submission process but I enjoy writing them.

If you get an idea, run with it.

Sandra, when we came up with the title for the anthology we knew it would probably strike some people the wrong way. We just hope that everyone reads the guidelines and understands that this is supposed to be a fat-friendly anthology, and isn't meant to be insulting. I wrote a blog post a few days ago in which I talked about some of our real motivation for the "Fat Girl" antho.

And yes, CG does like to "push the line" as you said, because we strongly believe that writing should foster open discussion. In fact blog posts like yours make us extremely happy because we love seeing people talking about the whys of it and discussing their feelings.

Veronica: Yes, we welcome the mixing of genres in stories - we didn't name ourselves Crossed Genres for nothing! ;) So long as the story has some elements of SF and/or F (and also follows the other guidelines specific to the anthology), any additional genres, like Crime, are welcome and even encouraged.

Welcome to the Corner, Bart!! Always good to see editors chime in. I'm looking forward to this anthology and I've been turning over a few ideas of my own. It's fun to see themes that make you think, cliche here, outside of the box :)
