I found an interesting discussion about strong female characters in fiction at this link http://www.cheryl-morgan.com/?p=10383 While the discussion pertains to the sci-fi/fantasy genre, those of us writing in the mystery genre tend to have the same problem with our female characters.

I started reading Cheryl Morgan’s comments feeling smug. I finished feeling like her target.
My prostitute character is a strong woman, but I don’t think that was my primary reason for creating her. I write about her because I can plausibly involve her in almost any kind of crime. She has been a suspect, she has cooperated with the police to protect her business, and she has witnessed things that the bad guys didn’t want anyone to see—all without wearing a skintight cat suit unless the client paid for it.
That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. SF guys, get your own rationalization!
I never think of Diana as a victim, Al. She works for herself and she has a strong sense of right and wrong, despite what she does for a living.
