I really hate publishers who charge a submission fee, but Green Fire Press really takes the prize in this category. I ran across a
submission call from their press that sounded pretty good but there was no mention of pay. Clicking over to their Submittable page I discovered they're charging $40 to submit. Too bad they didn't bother to mention this fact in their guidelines. Definitely won't be submitting there!

Wow, forty bucks? I wonder if they're a paying market...
I've seen some popularity in "critique fees" at some markets, where if they reject you, they'll give you an in-depth critique or edit for a fee.
Anyone who thinks this is a good idea ought to read Lawrence Block's The Crime of Our Lives, to read about how the Scott Meredith Agency operated.
There's no mention of pay at all, Thomas, or that they're doing critiques for that fee. And they charge a $50 fee for novel submission queries. Not good at all.
Wow. That sounds like vanity publishing, except without any guarantee of being published.
That pretty much sums it up, Manuel.
