Have you ever run across bits of advice that make perfect sense when you read them but the essay is more about the person giving the advice and how they used it? I loved the advice in this piece. http://booklifenow.com/2010/04/a-core-of-primal-emotions-writing-advice-from-nisi-shawl but I do wish the author would have expanded on it more. The first part is especially good.
I was thinking about Clair Dickson when I clicked on this link http://www.tor.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=blog&id=59029 The essay is "Breaking Rules and Making Babies" by Marie Rutkoski. Having children does change your writing habits but it doesn't have to kill your writing. Parenting writers need to adopt the Marines' slogan of adapting to the circumstances you find yourself in.
John Scalzi has a post about the Hugo nominations and I found his thoughts on the short story category very interesting. You'll find them a few paragaraphs down in his post. The shorts world is changing and people are starting to notice. http://whatever.scalzi.com/2010/04/05/hugo-thoughts-2010/
And today is the Do Some Damage flash challenge day. You'll find stories posted all about the mystery community for your reading pleasure. You'll find links to all the stories posted sometime today at http://dosomedamage.blogspot.com/ I was going to write a piece for this but didn't think I could do better than the one I wrote for Patti's "Shifting Gears" challenge back in 2008 which pretty much deals with the same recession topic. If you care to read "Rabbit in a Trap" you'll find it at this link http://powderburnflash.blogspot.com/2008/06/shifting-gears-flash-sandra-seamans.html

Cool links. thanks. I'll check out the story.
I couldn't think of a story for it either. Sometimes the theme just doesn't speak to you at that particular moment.
